These last years, researcher`s publications made it possible to elucidate those factors that not only influence children’s mental growth and development but also contributes to organism’s innate immune protection. With this regard gut microflora has particular role, because it has important physiologic role and in its development probiotics (main components of normal gut microflora) is crucial.
It is known that human gut biogenesis is formed by continuous circulation between environmental and gut microflora. For the first time microbial colonization occurs during childbirth in the mothers vagina, where vaginal flora is represented mainly by lactobacilli and bifid bacteria. Bacterial flora formations is continued after birth and goes through various stages, even during the first day of life gut is colonized by environmental bacteria’s, mainly aerobes like Cocci, also Enterobacteriace, Clostridia spp., yeasts, there are co -mensal and frankly pathogenic bacteria too. So called transitory disbacteriosis is formed and continues up to 6-8 days of life, after this normalization process takes place, so called transformation.
The gut flora is represented so: small intestine is practically sterile its proximal parts contain as few as 0-10x3 colony forming units per/ml (CFU/ml) and in its distal part no more than 10x5 CFU/ml, in the large intestine the load of bacterial flora is high, and in fecal masses there may be more than 400 species can be found.
Children’s large intestinal flora is represented by 3 bacterial species:
1. The main micro flora - anaerobic 93-95% of biogenesis (bifidobacteria and bacteroides) they play physiologic roles
2. Coexistent – lactobacilli and normal representatives of enteric rods, they play part in defense and digestive functions.
3. Remaining – aerobic saprophytic and co mensal organisms representing no more than 1% of the flora (Proteus spp., Enterococci, nonpathogenic staphylococci, yeasts…)
Bifido and Lactobacilli have marked antagonistic functions in the media having high enzymatic activity, form epithelial flora without penetrating it and provide protective barriers against, exogenous pathogenic bacterial colonization and inhibit growth of the pathogenic bacteria present in GI tract.
At birth mucosal layer can provide particular immune defense, but reaction is slow for the first time and T-cell functional capacity is lowered (reaction against foreign agents), at the same time immune processes are shifted toward Th-2 side, which explains lowered infection resistance and high susceptibility toward allergic reactions.
If in the first days of life probiotic dominance in the gut is achieved by mother’s milk, this is explained by presence of lactoferrin and oligosaccharides that are vital as bifid bacterial growth substrates (Bifid bacterial substrates) or by adapted formula (food enriched by probiotics). For the later age periods in children, probiotic addition in food is important for the child’s normal mental and physical development.
Probiotics are called microorganisms, which after entering GI tract, have positive influence on various pathologic or on their treatment processes.
The mechanisms by which probiotics positively influence different processes are:
1.      Make Lactic from lactose and increase acidity, which inhibits proliferation of pathogenic bacteria.
2.      Make short-chain fatty acids that are essential substrates for gut epithelial metabolism.
3.      Normalize enteric mucosal penetration by various agents that can be harmful, by restoring normal gut flora.
4.      Cause specific immune response stimulation ( increased synthesis of the secretory IgA is protective against infections)
5.      Increase in nonspecific (innate immune) responses via increased phagocytic activity.
6.       Regulate balance between T cells, increase Th1 activity (cell mediated immunity) and decrease Th2 (humoral immunity) formation.
In the newborn balance is shifted toward Th2, which is the reason why sensitization to exogenous foreign proteins found in food occurs. So reversal of this balance by probiotics may have good influence on decreasing allergic reactions.
Changes in the guts micro flora can be caused by general low reactivity of the organism, various newborn disorders (asphyxia, childbirth trauma, intrauterine infections, hemolytic disorders, hemorrhage, immune deficiencies), preterm infants have very low immunity, also contributing factor is antibiotic therapy which acts mainly on aerobic flora ,especially treatment with Cephalosporins, Lincomycin, less with Penicillin, with Macrolides, Chloramphenicol (Levomicetin), anaerobes stay particularly intact.
Changes in the guts normal microflora, caused by various unfavorable factors is called “Disbacteriosis”. This is qualitative and quantitative change where Lactobacilli and Bifid-bacteria are low, their antagonistic functions are lessened, less Lactic acid is produced and intraluminal acidity is lowered and co-mensal and pathogenic bacteria can produce overgrowth (Klebsiella, Pseudomonas, Candida (fungus)), small intestine is being colonized which negatively influence digestive process of proteins, carbohydrates and fats, boiling and spoiling processes increase, PH fluctuates which deregulates enzyme’s activities. At this time vitamin consumption by bacteria increase which brings us to endogenic polyvitamin deficiency.
Probiotic LACIDOFIL-WM is used in any type of disbacteriosis. It restores deranged bacterial flora, inhibits pathogenic strains, increase digestive processes, increases immunity, increase peristalsis.
Contains: Lactobacillus rhamnosus Rosell – 11, Lactobacillus acidofilus Rosell – 52, Maltodextrine and Ascorbic acid.
Lactobacilli in this medication contribute to normalization of physiologic balance in the normal bacterial flora, make lactic acid and create such micro environment that inhibits pathogenic bacterial strains. It has anti-Helicobacter pylori actions in combination with its traditional treatment drugs. Improves lactose intolerance and its symptoms.
LACIDOFIL-WM is safe for children and during pregnancy, it doesn’t contain pathogenic strains.
After the dose it maintains its activity (gut colonization duration) for 15-20 days, is gastric and bile acid resistant, is effective in chronic constipation, lessens the symptoms of allergic dermatitis and other allergic problems.
